CBD for dogs
For several years, natural products or food supplements for humans are taking more and more space in our stores. Well, it's the same for dogs, especially with CBD-based products. Oils, creams, treats, there is something for everyone. But what is it really? What are the benefits? What to watch out for? We explain it all to you below. 😉
The difference between CBD and THC?
CBD is the abbreviation of cannabidiol. It is a molecule that is present in the Cannabis Sativa family of plants, particularly in hemp. In view of its low THC content, it is therefore cultivated for therapeutic, cosmetic or industrial purposes, because it does not provide psychoactive effects (which disturbs the nervous system). Cannabis, on the other side, is cultivated for its high THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content. It is mainly used for recreational, spiritual and even medical purposes (with a doctor's prescription).
However, it is necessary to know that in CBD, it can remain traces of THC, because it is difficult to separate completely these 2 molecules.
Which benefits are attributed to it?
- Reduction of stress and anxiety
- Anti-pain and anti-inflammatory effect
- Stimulates the immune system
What to watch out for?
- If given in the wrong dosage or for the wrong reasons, this substance can be harmful to your dog.
- Do not buy the product anywhere (especially on the internet), because some retailers do not clearly indicate its origin and exact composition. For example: the THC content must be less than 0.2%, because dogs are very sensitive to this substance.
- Research on the benefits of CBD on dogs is recent.
For all these reasons, it is highly recommended to ask your veterinarian for advice before use.
The info/advice of our canine specialist, Dr. Capozzi, from the veterinary office of La Fonderie ?
When buying a CBD-based product, it is recommended to check that it is a "full spectrum" product, that means extracting the whole plant, so that it contains the other alkaloids or secondary active ingredients, which have a synergistic action with CBD.
Also, it is better absorbed by the oral mucosa, so it is important to give it either directly into the mouth of your dog, between the lips and teeth or under the tongue, or with a fatty food such as butter or pate.
